Article: Thoughts on Black Friday

Thoughts on Black Friday

I have always had a fascination with things - making things, buying things, keeping things. Even from a young age I was in awe at what us humans could do with our hands and magical opposable thumbs.

And, surprise surprise, I now own a manufacturing company, and spend all day every day making and selling things. Ethically made objects, from sustainably sourced materials, that people love and last a long time.

But things are still things, and there is no escaping the fact that "the world is just too full of crap," as I started a magazine interview with. But in the many conversations I've had with others, there is the valid argument that shopping ethically and sustainably is prohibitively expensive, and not buying at all is just plain impossible.

A quote has stuck in my head for many years, from a diet technique no less. Eat food, not too much, mostly vegetables. Just like eating, we do need to buy things. I altered it to fit the tangible good sector by altering it slightly: Buy meaningful stuff, not too much, preferably ethically made.

So, as we head into the biggest shopping weekend of the year, buy stuff you love. Not necessarily because you need it, but because it inspires happiness and will for a significant amount of time. Life would be boring if we only bought bread and lightbulbs. Search out local, well made, eco conscious options. If you can't, no biggie. Don't sweat it.

And so in a vaguely hypocritical fashion, our entire website is 30% off until Monday night with the code BF30, because sustainable business is great, but we do need sales in order to keep the lights on. Buy our stuff, only if you love it.
