Miss Rodeo California: an Interview with Sujhey Rosas

Rodeo Queens occupy a beautiful space in the horse world - a bridge from the rodeo and western world to the general public. They’re inspiring horsewomen; hardworking and community minded. In short - Horse Girl Icons. Beyond the charming smiles and gorgeous hair, Rodeo Queens act as ambassadors and historians, role models and public speakers.

We caught up with Miss Rodeo California herself, Sujhey Rosas, to discuss ambition, community, and of course: horses.

What have you loved most about your experience as Rodeo Queen California?

"The people you meet. While I am incredibly grateful for the unique opportunities and experiences that come with holding a rodeo queen title, my favorite part has always been the people. At every rodeo, I have the chance to meet new friends from all walks of life. I love hearing their stories, learning from their experiences, and listening to the wisdom they share."

What advice do you have for folks chasing big dreams and goals?

"Dream big, never give up, and always keep your head held high. Trust the people who believe in you, because they see something in you. Stay focused, be consistent, and don't be afraid of hard work. Most importantly, enjoy the journey. The memories, friendships, and lessons you gain along the way are just as valuable as the title itself."

What is a cherished memory that you will take with you from your time as MRC 2026?

"One of the most unforgettable moments of my rodeo queen journey was carrying the American flag at the San Diego Rodeo on my own horse. On Saturday alone, there were more than 24,000 people in attendance, making the atmosphere absolutely electric."

Can you tell us a little bit about your horse, Whiskey N' Payday?

"I purchased Payday a little over a year ago with the goal of improving my roping skills and gaining more experience in the arena. He came from a wonderful family who had owned and cared for him for many years and was their backup roping horse. When I brought him home, he quickly adapted to a new role, trading ropes for flags and embracing life as a rodeo queen horse.

Since then, Payday has been my dependable partner, carrying me with confidence and grace at events. I am incredibly grateful for his steady presence and the many memories we've already made together. My goal is to be able to compete with him in the future in team roping. For now he will be the most perfect queen horse!"

What does it mean to you to be a horse girl?

"To be a horse girl, you don't have to grow up on a ranch, spend your childhood in the saddle, or come from generations of western roots. Being a horse girl isn't defined by where you come from. It’s defined by what's in your heart and soul!

It's the girl who feels at home the moment she steps into a barn. The girl whose dreams are filled with happy trails and open arenas. The girl who works tirelessly for every ride, every lesson, and every opportunity to be around the animals she loves. It's the girl who finds freedom in the saddle, comfort in a horse's presence, and joy in the western way of life.

Being a horse girl is about passion, determination, and an unbreakable connection to something greater than yourself. It doesn't matter how you got there, what matters is the love you carry. If horses are what inspire you, challenge you, and make your soul feel alive, then you belong. No matter your background, your journey, or your experience level, there is a place for you in this community."

In partnership with Milton Menasco, we created two special pieces for Sujhey. Starting with two hardworking cowgirl staples; the Colt Shirt and the Lariat Tie, we added traditional western chainstitch embroidery to create something truly personal. Hand-embroidered poppies adorn the tie.
